Kokrajhar district is located in the western most part of Assam and is the gateway to North-East India. It is the land of multi-language and multi-culture. The predominant tribes are Bodo, Rajbonshi, and Santhali with different traditions and culture. The agro-climatic condition of the district falls under lower Brahmaputra valley zone with sub-tropical climate in nature characterized by warm-humid summer and cool-dry winter. Agriculture is the main occupation of Kokrajhar District and contributes a major part in district economy. Rice is the main crop and considered as staple food followed by rapeseed-mustard, sesamum, maize, buckwheat, millet, etc. Fiber crop such as Jute and mesta were also cultivated and after retting the fibers were supplied to bordering state. Horticultural and fruits crops are also grown in the region like banana (variety- Malbhog), pineapple, Jackfruit, Assam lemon, Pamelo, Guava, Litchi, Amla, jujube etc and almost all seasonable vegetables grown and commercially sold in and outside the district. Further, animal husbandry sectors also play a major role in district economy. Pig farming, milch cow, poultry, duckery and Goattery are reared in almost every household. Sericulture also plays a major role in contributing district economy. Ericulture is most predominant in sericulture not only for its tradition but also a living culture. They primarily rear eri silk worm for eri pupae, as for tribal it is an exotic food and food of delicacy; cocoon is a secondary by product.
Therefore, it was known that the farming community of the district are mainly engaged in agriculture, livestock farming, sericulture, handloom etc, Hence, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kokrajhar always tries to disseminates the proven scientific technologies in farmer’s field after multi-location trial or on farm testing. The new scientifically proven technologies in various agricultural sectors like veterinary, agronomy, horticulture, fishery, soil science, community science etc are not only based on scientific research but also known to have satisfactory yield/production. Bio-fortified variety as for example sweet potato- Bhu sona and Bhu krishna; Paddy -CR Dhan 310 and CR Dhan 311; High yielding variety of paddy, sesame, vegetables etc are such examples which are already disseminated in farmer’s field. Efforts have also been made to aware various farming communities on organic farming and natural farming; importance of nutrition; health, hygiene and diet etc. various infrastructure support, fund etc are made through convergence with line departments od agriculture, sericulture, animal husbandry and veterinary, handloom, fishery, DICC, block development offices and banks. KVK frequently send mobile advisories through SMS and through interpersonal communications. Counselling in varied field such as entrepreneurship development, nutrition and diet, health and hygiene, drudgery, carrier counselling etc, were also provided at counselling center of KVK. At the last but not the least, KVK Kokrajhar is always for the benefit of farming community in terms of disseminating the proven scientific technologies for betterment of agriculture as a whole.
